new stone age-OMD.

brilliant and eerie track from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Opening track on the underrated gem "Architecture and Morality" (1981),

M83- kim and jessie.

really catchy song by M83. i bet that all two people that read this have already heard this song and/or seen the video but who cares.

cadieux cafe.

thanks, tony bourdain. you have officially made me feel like shit for not staying at the cadieux that ONE time when Laura took me here over St. Patty's day weekend and then left because there were so many people celebrating (go figure, belgian themed bars attract st. patrick's day celebrators). I'm not sure, but I believe one of my friends works here. Also, this is the only place in the US that offers Feather Bowling...yeah, bar, moule frites, and feather bowling...sounds like a grand old time. maybe i need to get a girlfriend exclusively to drive me to this place every week for the rest of my life...well, this place, and polish village in hamtramck (i'm not down for going to polonia, sorry tony!). one beef i have with this episode is that they failed to mention so many other great places in detroit. they could have actually gone to so many other great places in detroit/ hamtramck/ dearborn. dammit, now i really really REALLY want dill pickle soup, golapki, pierogi, and most of all JACOBY'S! I NEED ME SOME JAGERSCHNITZEL, FOLKS!!! man, when did this turn into a food blog?!

La Isla Bonita- Byanka.

speaking of Madge, i got this record for free from a friend...that's right! FREE!

MADONNA.

this video is awesome! when madonna actually sung onstage and goofy girls wore mismatched thrift store wares. i'm wondering where this was. it could be COBO HALL (it looks like it...i saw Jay-Z there last year for a ROC the vote, if you will).

rants and raves.

in the midst of craigslist ads in the rant and rave columns that are geared toward racist ideals (the gates controversy), i spotted this one entitled "penut butter and jelly time" that states (and i quote): "thats right bitches i just made 3 pb and j samiches yummmmmmmyyyyyy." Possibly my favorite post on craigslist ever! i'm really pissed off, however, at all of the racist posts that throw the n word around like it's going out of style. i swear, the people that write those posts are the most brain dead people on the planet that haven't been in a hospital. anyway, i wrote a little sentence about it in my ricky martin address book. hopefully someday it will be the basis of a performance art piece (maybe an idea for "free pizza!" when my cousin and i do our noise set up north for stupid people that have boats). speaking of noise pieces, i just wanted to share a thought: when an incredible voice changer's microphone breaks and you turn up the volume all the way up, it sounds awesome! it's like a spaceship has landed and the gristleizer (screwed up sounds that throbbing gristle popularized with chugging sounds) have fuzed to make an amazingly beautiful noise. i can't wait!

karate bullfighter.

sonny chiba (probably now more well known in kill bill) killing a bull in this film. once i saw it on Sundance channel late at night and was laughing uncontrollably at this scene....and no, i wasn't high.

i think this is possibly going to be the best blog post i've ever done. SERIOUSLY, HOW DOES THIS FILM EXIST?

the overload.

quite possibly the darkest of the talking heads songs. the ethereal sound of it gives it a Joy Division like quality. anyone know how to fix a broken casio pt-80? while trying to fix it, i broke it even further. none of the keys work and it won't turn on. dang!

this song is ALWAYS in my head!

dammit! NU SHOOZ! don't worry people, i think if people see you dancing, they will totally understand. ask them to dance with you!.

BREAKAWAY (1966).

Breakaway

a short experimental piece done by the artist Bruce Conner. Submitted to the New York Film Festival but was initially rejected because it was too short. Features a young Toni Basil (of "Mickey" fame) dancing to her song (apparently).

did the earth swallow you up? or are you waiting for me?

here's a good little tribute to once in a lifetime by the talking heads. i once saw a vintage slip it in shirt at the cats meow (punk/new wave/ alternative store in my hometown... RIP) and really wanted it but my mom was with me when i found it...yeah i'm a pussy, get over it!

hanky-panky nohow.

there's something about paris 1919 by john cale that tears at my heartstrings. every time i listen to it i feel super sentimental and call me mr. emo-mcsadstein but i tear up a little bit.
here's another sob story for you all: On Saturday was my birthday so I went home because my mom was going to give me a card. Today my sister moved to Tennessee with her fiancee and so on Saturday we had a last family dinner for a long time (or at least until Thanksgiving). My mom received a call from my Grandma, and my mom asked if she wanted to talk to me and my grandma replied yes. We had this conversation about how my birthday was going, and the truth was that at that time it was incredibly boring. After my Grandma told me she had a card for me but did not leave it at my house, she passed the phone off to my great aunt, who apparently was in town. My great aunt attempted suicide about a month ago, and so when I was talking to her, it was incredibly awkward. She has been taking medication and going to therapy for that incident and, at that moment I was extremely depressed. I love my aunt and would never want her to feel pain physically or emotionally. But she did. She felt pain (obviously enough to take a handful of pills in order to end her own life). She told me that she had a wok for me and I thanked her. I realized how awful I'm going to feel when I see her next (family reunion is in a week). Hopefully I can have my cousin take some pictures of her and me (for my birthday my mom told me she would order me some film and a new 3 volt battery for my land camera, so I'm excited to use it...even for sentimental purposes, this camera is going to be my second best friend for awhile...which reminds me, where the hell is IAN?!).

i hate myself.

Last night I ran into Randy Chabot of the band Deastro (he used to BE Deastro but i guess something happened when he decided to get members to back him up) at Noise Camp. My friend just introduces me to him when I saw him at Cityfest about two weeks ago and awkwardly stated to some other friends that their set the prior day was not up to my standards...my standards were pretty high, let me tell you, since I saw them open for Japanther at the Trumbullplex earlier this year (I believe it was in november but could be wrong). That set at Trumbullplex was absolutely THE MOST FUN AT A SUPER CHEAP CONCERT I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED! now they are on Ghostly International and when I saw them at the pure detroit stage at cityfest, it was the most boring sight that i have seen in awhile. Here is where the big but is in the post: (and I cannot lie) BUT Randy Chabot is a really, really nice guy and I am a fan of that show at the Trumbullplex, AND I really like the album Keepers (his first record [?]...get it!) and I do believe sometimes you have to tame down a show for festivals when it is free. I just wish the dudes in Deastro had brought their animal masks and played some more dance-able songs because that is what they are, an awesome dancey band and usually hype live act.

ballad of birmingham.

Mother dear, may I go downtown
Instead of out to play,
And march the streets of Birmingham
In a Freedom March today?"

"No, baby, no, you may not go,
For the dogs are fierce and wild,
And clubs and hoses, guns and jails
Aren't good for a little child."

"But, mother, I won't be alone.
Other children will go with me,
And march the streets of Birmingham
To make our country free."

"No, baby, no, you may not go,
For I fear those guns will fire.

But you may go to church instead
And sing in the children's choir."

She has combed and brushed her night-dark hair,
And bathed rose petal sweet,
And drawn white gloves on her small brown hands,
And white shoes on her feet.

The mother smiled to know that her child
Was in the sacred place,
But that smile was the last smile
To come upon her face.

For when she heard the explosion,
Her eyes grew wet and wild.
She raced through the streets of Birmingham
Calling for her child.

She clawed through bits of glass and brick,
Then lifted out a shoe.
"O, here's the shoe my baby wore,
But, baby, where are you?"-- Dudley Randall

hygienic dress league.

there are a few abandoned buildings that have been transformed into giant jigsaw puzzle pieces throughout the city of detroit. this is one of them. one day i was getting lunch at american coney island with my friend Brandi and then took a different route back by myself since Brandi was going on a job interview at a now defunct coffee shoppe. i encountered this old building and thought "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!". i called my friend about this and asked if he has ever seen this site. i believe this is on grand river (i'm sure it's in downtown detroit).

Swoon.

BLOOD CAMP.

if you're reading this and you live in the area, (or in the burbs...MAKE A TREK OUT) come to NOISE CAMP at the CAID on July 18th (my birthday) my neighbor Aran Ruth is playing a set (which should be really interesting...second year i'm seeing her on my birthday). this should be a crazy night to feel (or not feel) as nihilistic as possible. NOISE CAMP is put on by the Time Stereo collective every year (i don't even know how long it's been going on...but don't care, since it's so good who cares about trivialities on this topic). come by, get a ribbon that says something really great (like Kwame Ate My Baby, Blood Camp, Sleepaway Camp Surprise, etc.), get some sake in a watermelon served by a nurse, get uncomfortable, and all around bothered. you can also get a free noise camp haircut. i believe you can also buy experimental records and DVDs there, too. the event is free (apart from if you want to buy things) so there isn't really an excuse to not come since it's a mindblowing event.

i love her.

i really should be studying for my french exam. less than three hours to go. yikes!

the cat was on his knee and smiled at me.

my friend josh told me about Sibylle Baier and the story of how she came to release her album was so great.

building burning.

one of my favorite local groups. they're just great.

i've been craving these like mad.

but they've been discontinued.

inside.

ADULT. - "Inside" Music Video from Danny Kim on Vimeo.

my friend once woke up in ADULT.'s garage (they live really really close to my apartment in the New Center area so it was actually within walking distance from Adam and Nicola's house). this is their new video.

detroit: the haven for abandoned buildings.

soon this will be no more.

frank stella.

awhile back i found a copy of "Minimal Art: A Critical Anthology" (a book published amidst the popularization of minimal art) and it always reminds me of how great Frank Stella's style was and how cool Sol Lewitt's random boxes are. There is also mention of Oldeburg and Roy Lichtenstein (one of my favorite pop artists). i still can't believe i found a copy of the book for 50 cents at the undergraduate library's book sale.

political-erotical-mystical.

sometimes my grandma and i go to the DIA and i always suggest that we go to the modern/ contemporary section and she generally hates everything in that section with the exception to 1.) Wooden Motorcycle by Fumio Yoshimura and 2.) "Alphabet in the form of an ice cream bar" by Claes Oldenburg. Almost everything else she figures she could do which i always respond with "THEN WHY DON'T YOU GRANDMA, YOU COULD BE RICH!"...she never knows how to respond to that.

well i feel alright!

i love this lady so so so so so much. long live motown and geektown.

just try a little bit of tenderness.

otis redding never fails to give me chills. this man was the real deal. you couldn't fake such talent.

keep it on the down low.

i wanted to post the video for "down low (nobody has to know)" by R. Kelly and Ron Isley, but R. Kelly disabled embedding on all of his videos so i'm just going to suggest everyone that reads this (all two or three people) to look at that video. it's a really good song and ron isley also did a follow up video response to it called "contagious". my sister and i both really loved that track...actually that one i loved ironically, but the video for "down low (nobody has to know)" actually made me really sad the first time i saw it because this hot girl dies in a hospital and R. Kelly is in a wheelchair all beaten up and then he just looks up and it's over. it's really epic.

do you believe her...is this for real?

I remember buying this CD in high school and couldn't get enough of it...like how my dad used to listen to the first ramones record all the time. "Whip It On" is so good, i don't care if you disagree.

American, you are magnificent.

"In the French Style" (Robert PARRISH, 1963).

a squid in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous, got me?

eno+byrne= heaven...is a place where nothing...nothing ever happens.

from "my life in the bush of ghosts". i owe my life to david byrne...literally (my parents first met at my mom's shared duplex listening to TELEVISION's "MARQUEE MOON" [both with respective girlfriend/ boyfriends in tow] with her ex boyfriend, and my dad was good friends with her ex boyfriend that owned a record store...dad went to this record store [already done with his ex girlfriend...mom said she was sort of a bitch], mom broke up with her ex boyfriend, but they hit it off at this record store discussing talking heads, and have been together ever since....my mom wanted to be tina weymouth when she was younger).
this record is one of my favorite experimental ones.

this song has been stuck in my head lately.

i feel like this blog is turning into a tumblr site...whatever. i mentioned it. the end. maybe i should just delete this and have a tumblr site instead...it would be a lot easier. (by the way, if you've seen "Tupac Resurrection," you know that he really liked this song back in the day. again, not making this shit up!

tonight i wanna dance with someone else!

I really love lasers and I love the best examples of misguided ideas (mainly in fashion choices...but hey, hindsight is 20/20, right?)... basically, it's like the wonder twin powers activate in the form of an awesome website. Fully endorsed by itstimeforthepercolator.
