A view of Centralia, Pennsylvania's former Route 61. In the early 1960s (I believe the year was 1962) someone set fire to a landfill under the town and being that the town was built as a coal mining town, the coal caught and it was forgotten about until the price of putting the fire out had gotten so expensive that it was decided that it would be more cost efficient to just relocate the citizens that wanted to be relocated. To this day there are approximately 9 people living in Centralia. Living around patches of exposed holes pumping out carbon monoxide like an underground factory. It is assumed that the fire will finally just burn out in about 250 years or so.
